Adaptive Technology Web Accessibility

Page history last edited by Ryan S. Overdorf 12 years, 7 months ago

Creating accessible web pages is an excellent way to effectively communicate with patrons who use adaptive technology. The Committee acknowledges that not all CS-SIS members work in institutions where they can control or influence the web site design; however, many do.

This page links to accessibility guidelines and tools. The wiki accessibility report is linked below the tools.

 Guidelines

Section 508

A federal government web site that discusses Section 508, an amendment to the Rehabilitation Act codified in the federal regulations at 36 C.F.R.ยง1194.22.

Section 508 applies to federal agencies. The Department of Justice has used Section 508 to measure Web accessibility when reaching settlements with local municipalities. The current Section 508 is a simplified version of the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines version 1.0.  the current Section 508 is soon to be superseded.  See the discussion on assistive technology and the law for more details.

Section 508 Refresh

If the final regulations reflect the current draft, the new Section 508 regulations will actually be more difficult to meet than the regulations likely to be adopted for other entities covered by the Americans with Disabilities Act.

Web Content Accessibility Guidelines version 2.0

The Web Content Accessibility Guidelines  (WCAG) 2.0 define sixty-one Success Criteria to measure twelve guidelines for three levels of compliance.  There are twenty-six Success Criteria relevant to A level compliance.  AA level compliance adds an additional twelve

Success Criteria for a total of thirty-eight. AAA level compliance adds an additional twenty-three Success Criteria to the first thirty-eight.

The Justice Department proposes to implement the thirty-eight Success Criteria relevant to AA level compliance as regulations applicable to entities covered by the Americans with Disabilities Act.    See the discussion on assistive technology and the law for more details.

 Tools

AChecker

AChecker can be used to validate against most of the WCAG 2.0 AA level Success Criteria.

WAVE

WAVE generates a report listing web accessibility errors and other elements that may require attention to make a website fully accessible. It is a service of WebAIM which is affiliated with Utah State University.

W3C Validator
